The University of North Florida is a public, 4-year school located in Jacksonville, FL. The school was founded in 1969 and opened in 1972 as an upper division college, but started admitting freshmen in 1984. In 1980, the school nearly merged with the University of Florida, but the governor vetoed the bill. The school is an independent member of the State University System of Florida. The 1,300 acre campus features contemporary architecture consistent with typical Florida style. The main academic campus is compressed into one area, but there are many open and green spaces and an outdoor amphitheater adjacent to the Student Union building. Notable alumni include ESPN broadcaster Sara Walsh and economist Mark Vitner.
